Thomas/Dunn Collection, 1863-1906 1863-1866.

The following collection contains materials saved from a burn pile and donated by Everard Thomas, of Saugatuck, Michigan and Michigan author Leonard G. Overmyer III. Thomas was a younger neighbor of William H. Dunn. Dunn participated in the battle of Gettysburg and served in the Tennessee Valley, serving in the Fifth and Tenth Michigan Cavalry. The collection includes Civil War era letters, documents, G.A.R. records, and over fifty original enlistment papers of Michigan cavalry soldiers. Selected parts of the collection are also being donated to the Saugatuck Historical Society, Bentley Historial Library in Ann Arbor, and the U.S. Army Military History Institute.

William H. Dunn was born 1844 in Milton, New York to William and Eliza Dunn. The family relocated to Ganges, Allegan, Michigan between 1850 and 1860. When Dunn was 18, he enlisted in Company I, Fifth Cavalry on August 14, 1862. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in Company D of the Tenth Michigan Cavalry, later joining Company E.
